CAIRO - 17 October 2021: US Ambassador to Egypt Jonathan Cohen has hailed good and strategic partnership between Washington and Cairo to contain Covid-19.

Earlier on Saturday, Health Minister Hala Zayed announced that 1,611,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived at Cairo International Airport as a gift to Egypt from the US through COVAX mechanism.

“Today’s delivery is part of more than 8 million Pfizer vaccine doses the United States is sending to Egypt. Our governments and people have been working side-by-side, every day, to fight the pandemic,” the ambassador said.

“We welcome the arrival of additional 1.6 million doses of Pfizer vaccine to Cairo! This donation is yet another facet of our long-standing strategic partnership, helping ensure Egyptians are safer against the threat of the pandemic,” the diplomat added.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said the shipment of vaccines will be tested by the Egypt Drug Authority (EDA) before they are being distributed to 1,100 vaccination centers nationwide.

COVAX mechanism is an unprecedented global effort between CEPI, Gavi, Unicef, PAHO, and WHO to ensure equitable access to immunization throughout the world.
