CAIRO- 23 August: Egypt expressed its deep concern on Saturday over the increasing reports on famine and starvation in the Gaza Strip.

According to a statement released by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Egypt stressed the necessity for the international community to put an end to the blatant crimes and violations being committed, among the consequences of which is the tragic humanitarian situation in the Strip.

Egypt called on the international community to intervene decisively against Israel's transgressions, which have reached the extent of imposing restrictions on the entry of available humanitarian assistance that is capable of ending the famine in the shortest possible time.

Moreover, Cairo underscored the responsibility of the international community for the current state of affairs, which has resulted from the pursuit of double-standard policies that do not reflect the universality of human rights—rights that have been both politicized and reduced to mere lip service over the past decades.

Egypt noted that this This occurred while there has been a failure to defend the most basic of these values during the Israeli aggressive war on the Gaza Strip against a defenseless people, who are now deprived of their daily sustenance without effective intervention from the international community to stop this war.

Egypt valued the statements of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, in which he affirmed that the famine in the Gaza Strip is a man-made disaster and a failure of humanity, emphasizing Israel's obligations under international law to ensure the provision of medical and food supplies to the population as the occupying power.

A UN-backed food security analysis has officially confirmed that famine is underway in Gaza City, marking the first such declaration since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report released on Friday, more than 500,000 people are currently facing famine conditions, with the crisis expected to spread across other areas of the strip in the coming weeks.

By the end of September, the IPC projects that over 640,000 people will face "catastrophic" hunger (IPC Phase 5), while more than 1.1 million will experience emergency-level food insecurity (Phase 4).

Severe conditions are also reported in northern Gaza, though lack of access has hindered full assessment.

The report indicates that the three thresholds required to declare famine: extreme food deprivation, acute malnutrition, and starvation-related deaths, have been met in Gaza City, said UN agencies.

The report warns that without urgent humanitarian access, the crisis will continue to escalate.

The Palestinian Ministry of Gaza said on Saturday that In the past 24 hours, hospitals in the Gaza Strip recorded eight new deaths due to starvation and malnutrition, including two children, bringing the total number of deaths to 281, including 114 children.

It added that 61 martyrs and 308 wounded arrived at hospitals in the Strip over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll from the Israeli aggression to 62,622 and 157,673 wounded since October 7, 2023.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry added that the number of aid victims arriving at hospitals over the past 24 hours reached 16 martyrs and 111 wounded, bringing the total number of victims arriving at hospitals to 2,076 and more than 15,308 wounded.

It noted that a number of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets, as ambulance and civil defense crews are unable to reach them at this time.

It clarified that the death toll and injuries since March 18, 2025 to date have been 10,778 martyrs and 45,632 injuries.
