Aswan wins 2019 UNESCO Learning Award for its achievement in Education

CAIRO - 4 February 2019: The beautiful city, Aswan has been awarded of the 2019 UNESCO Learning City Award, among ten other winners, by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong learning (UIL).



UNESCO Institute for Lifelong learning (UIL) awarded the 10 cities for their ideal development and their commitment in promoting for education and innovative ideas for learning techniques, in addition to their determination in creating policies and programs that help develop the educational system.

Egypt's Awan, as stated by the UIL earned the award for its capability of developing new strategies and diversified projects that included gardening and water conservation in schools.



"Providing diverse training opportunities for all segments of society were among the most important factors for winning the award." said Mervat al-Samman, a coordinator for Aswan in the UIL.

This award is presented every two years to cities in each of the five UNESCO regions that have managed to achieve significant development in learning. Also, the progress should be achieved by implementing the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities guiding documents.



The winning cities will be presented with the awards in Colombia’s Medellin at the 2019 International Conference on Learning Cities. Alongside our Aswan, the other winning cities are Malaysia’s Petaling Jaya, China’s Chengdu, Greece’s Heraklion, Nigeria’s Ibadan, Ukraine’s Melitopol, Mexico’s Santiago, South Korea’s Seodaemun-gu, and Denmark’s Sonderborg.

We couldn't be more proud of our Aswan for being recognized for its efforts in providing learning opportunities for citizens, and for achieveing such a significant development.
