CAIRO – 21 September 2025: The State Information Service (SIS) clarified in an official statement on Saturday that the Egyptian Armed Forces’ presence in Sinai is aimed at securing the country’s borders, countering terrorism and smuggling.

The statement came in response to increased media reports questioning the nature of Egypt's military deployment in the peninsula.

The troop presence is conducted in full coordination with parties to the peace treaty with Israel, the statement said, stressing that Egypt remains fully committed to the agreement.

“Egypt has never violated any treaty or agreement throughout its history,” the SIS emphasized.

Meanwhile, the statement reiterated Egypt’s strong rejection of any expansion of military operations in Gaza and its categorical opposition to the displacement of Palestinians from their land.

The SIS also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the Palestinian people's right to establish their independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the two-state solution.

Amidst the war in neighboring Gaza, Egypt has repeatedly confirmed its adherence to the 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which was signed in Washington, as long as Israel continues to respect it as well.

The agreement, which restricts Egypt’s military presence in the Sinai Peninsula, resulted in Israel’s full withdrawal from the territory, which the Israeli forces had captured during the 1967 war.

The treaty followed years of Egypt-Israeli conflict, including the 6th of October, 1973 war, during which Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and regained major parts of Sinai, laying the groundwork for subsequent negotiations.
