Egypt, Germany FMs agree on enhancing bilateral relations

CAIRO – 14 May 2025: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty, conducted a phone call on Monday, with the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Johann Wadephul.

This marked the first communication between the two Ministers following the formation of the new German government.

Minister Abdelatty extended his congratulations to his German counterpart on assuming his new position, praising the close and friendly relations between the two countries. He expressed his aspiration to elevate the level of cooperation in economic, political, commercial, and investment fields in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both peoples.

The discussion addressed ways to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment. Minister Abdelatty also commended the role played by German companies in supporting development efforts in Egypt, particularly through infrastructure development.

He affirmed Egypt’s keenness to further strengthen economic ties by encouraging increased German investment in Egypt and boosting Egyptian exports to the German market. They Egyptian Minister further highlighted various promising sectors for investment, including energy and renewable energy. The conversation also touched on migration issues and the transfer of qualified labor to Germany.

Moreover, Minister Abdelatty also expressed his expectation for Germany’s support of Egypt’s interests within European institutions, particularly the approval of the second tranche of the European financial package allocated to Egypt—amounting to €4 billion—as part of the implementation of the six pillars of the strategic and comprehensive partnership between Egypt and the European Union.

He further highlighted the significant economic burdens borne by Egypt as a result of hosting 10 million foreigners and reviewed the efforts undertaken by the Egyptian government to prevent irregular migration across the Mediterranean to Europe, in addition to the numerous crises affecting the region.

The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional issues of mutual concern, foremost among them the developments regarding the Palestinian cause.

Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt’s mediation efforts—alongside Qatar and the United States—to resume the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, given the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Strip. He emphasized the urgent need to halt the escalation and to establish a political horizon that would lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state, thereby achieving peace, security, and stability in the region.
