CAIRO – 10 April 2022: Egypt's President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi received a phone call Sunday from President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, in which they exchange views on means to deal with the fallout of the Ukrainian crisis, especially in relation to energy supplies, food security, and disruption to supply chain.
In that context, the two parties congrued on regular coordination in the coming period to crystallize joint initiatives and endeavors to mitigate such ordeal. They also discussed other regional and international issues and matters of mutual interest, and coordination of stances on them.
On her side, von der Leyen expressed the European Union's appreciation for the strong and outstanding relations with Egypt, affirming aspiration to continue pushing forward cooperation with the country on all levels. That is in light of the joint interest embodied in combating challenges facing the Middle East, and given Egypt's pivotal salience for the region and Africa.
In turn, President Sisi stressed Egypt's keenness on expanding ties with the European Union, which is a strategic partner in various fields, as well as consultations on mutual concerns.
The presidency's press statement indicated that the two leaders reciprocated words of satisfaction with the growth of bilateral institutional cooperation, politically, economically, and developmentally.
President Sisi met in February with von der Leyen at the 6th European Union – African Union Summit kicks off in Brussels, as they discussed cooperation in the sectors of new and renewable energy, infrastructure, and green transformation.
That is in addition to combating illegal migration, terrorism, and extremism as well as Egypt's hosting of COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh in November. They also conferred over main political issues of mutual interest in the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa.
President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel said in March that Egypt is an essential strategic partner of Europe, and that such deep relations are manifested in the recent momentum in joint cooperation.
That was in a meeting with the Egyptian envoy at the union, where talks tackled partnerships in the fields of renewable energy, liquefied gas, and clean energy, among other matters.
President Michel also described Egypt as a vital strategic partner of Europe in the energy sector. He further expressed eagerness to continue communication with President Sisi because of his wisdom in dealing with different issues and crises on the regional and international scales.
