Almost 50% of railroads, stations development in Egypt completed

Egypt's Minister of Transportation Kamel al-Wazir held a meeting Sunday with the chairperson and board members of the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA) to follow up on the accomplishment rate of the development of stations and railways.

CAIRO – 5 July 2020: Egypt's Minister of Transportation Kamel al-Wazir held a meeting Sunday with the chairperson and board members of the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA) to follow up on the accomplishment rate of the development of stations and railways.


The set plan provides the renovation of 1,102 railways and the upgrade of the control systems of 1,120 railroads at a cost of LE2.5 billion. So far,700 of the former, and 439 of the latter have been finished.


In addition, 173 out of 180 train stations across the country were renovated at LE1.7 billion. The upgrade of the remaining sevenis underway.


ERA is also constructing Bashtil Station at LE4.7 billion. The project – located in Giza - is aimed at serving Upper Egypt by linking together different means of transportation, and carrying out maintenance for the vehicles reducing the load on central stations in Cairo and Giza. The station will house a shopping mall as well as hangers and workshops for maintenance.
