CAIRO –20 July 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty affirmed the need for pursuing peaceful solutions to regional conflicts during several phone calls he made on Saturday with his British counterpart David Lammy, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the aforementioned contacts addressed efforts to consolidate the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, ensure non-renewal of hostilities, and advance the political and peaceful path forward.
Abdelatty emphasized the necessity of resuming negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear program, between Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the E3 countries(France, the United Kingdom and Germany) in a way that restores the diplomatic solutions and addresses concerns related to the program, especially with the expected date for activating the UN sanctions mechanism within a few weeks, according to what the E3 countries announced.
During his call with the UK Foreign Secretary, Abdelatty discussed ways to develop and strengthen bilateral relations between Cairo and London, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and tourism.
Moreover, he discussed means of cooperation with the Director General IAEA in order to advance the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The Foreign Minister’s intensified contacts come in the backdrop of new media reports suggesting that the US’s military strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities failed to “obliterate” Tehran’s nuclear programme, as President Donald Trump claimed on several occasions.
The Washington Post and NBC News cited multiple US officials confirming that the late June strikes only managed to destroy the Fordo nuclear facility, while its counterparts Natanz and Isfahan attained more surface level damages.
The Iranian authorities have yet to provide details on the extent of damage its nuclear programme suffered. Several media reports citing Iranian officials claimed that the facilities sustained significant damage, simultaneously asserting that most of the highly enriched uranium at the nuclear facilities had been moved to an undisclosed location prior to the US attacks.
