Russia praises Egypt, Qatar for Gaza ceasefire agreement

CAIRO – 5 February 2025: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has commended Egypt and Qatar for their crucial role in brokering the last ceasefire agreement in Gaza, according to a statement released by the Russian foreign ministry.

Moreover, Lavrov emphasized the significant contributions of Cairo and Doha in facilitating the agreement and mitigating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The top diplomat expressed deep concern over the high civilian casualty count in Gaza, stating that the number of deaths has far exceeded those in the decade-long Ukraine conflict, reaffirming the need for a lasting peace and putting an end to the violence.

The Russian foreign minister also expressed concerns regarding Israel's alleged plans for the annexation of the West Bank, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

After 15 months of intense conflict, a ceasefire agreement was reached on January 15, 2025 between Israel and Hamas, Mediated by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar.

The most prominent clauses included in the agreement entailed an immediate cessation of hostilities between the two parties, facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid to alleviate the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the strip and setting a base for future discussions with the objective of achieving long term peace
