CAIRO - 16 July 2025: In a presidential statement shared on social media, Egypt expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to solve issues related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The statement showed appreciation for Trump’s acknowledgement of the Nile being Egypt’s lifeline.

“Egypt also appreciates President Trump’s keenness on reaching a just agreement that safeguards the interests of all parties regarding the Ethiopian Dam, as well as his recognition of the Nile as a source of life for Egypt,” according to the statement.

“Egypt reaffirms its support for President Trump’s vision of establishing just peace, security, and stability for all countries in the region and around the world,” the statement added.

It also named the conflict in Ukraine and the Palestinian Territories as areas in which the U.S. president endeavors to reach peace.

The statement placed full trust in Trump’s ability to bring about an end such conflicts.

On Monday, Trump said in a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House that “I think if I am Egypt, I want to have water in the Nile, and we are working on that.”

He said the dam is “closing up water going to the Nile.”

“I think the United States funded the dam. I do not know why they didn't solve the problem before they built the dam. But it is nice when the Nile River has water,” he added.

Trump acknowledged that the Nile is “a very important source of income and life,” saying that “to take that away is pretty incredible. But we think we are going to have that solved very quickly.”
