Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung witnessed the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding in Seoul on Thursday, covering economic cooperation, technology, clean energy, industry and maritime transport.

A Broader Strategic Partnership



The agreements followed official talks between the two leaders at the presidential office in Seoul, where El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with South Korea across a broad range of sectors.

El-Sisi said the two countries shared a common vision for expanding bilateral cooperation and expressed confidence that their newly elevated strategic partnership would mark a significant turning point in relations.

He described South Korea as an important partner for Egypt and stressed Cairo’s commitment to encouraging greater Korean investment while expanding political consultations between the two governments.


A Turning Point in Relations

El-Sisi said the newly elevated strategic partnership could mark a significant turning point in Egypt-South Korea relations and open the door to broader economic, industrial and technological cooperation.



Technology, Energy and Industry



The two presidents witnessed the signing of an agreement on social insurance cooperation between the Egyptian and South Korean governments.

The agreement was signed by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his South Korean counterpart Cho Hyun.


Social insurance: Government-to-government cooperation agreement

ICT: Cooperation between Egypt’s communications ministry and South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT

Clean energy: Cooperation between the two countries’ energy authorities

Industry: New memorandum linking Egypt’s Ministry of Industry with its South Korean counterpart


A memorandum of understanding on information and communications technology was signed between Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT.

Egypt and South Korea signed a package of agreements spanning technology, clean energy, industry and other strategic sectors.


The memorandum was signed by Abdelatty and South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon.

The two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding on clean energy cooperation between Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.

Another memorandum was signed between the Egyptian Ministry of Industry and South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, with Khaled Hashem signing on behalf of Egypt.


Maritime Cooperation



The agreements also included a memorandum of understanding on maritime cooperation between Egypt’s Ministry of Transport and South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir signed the memorandum on behalf of Cairo.


Toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership



In a further step toward deeper economic ties, the two presidents witnessed the signing of a joint statement announcing the start of negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between Egypt and South Korea.

The statement was signed on the Egyptian side by Minister of Investment and Trade Mohamed Farid Saleh.

Beyond Individual Agreements

The proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is intended to provide a wider framework for trade, investment and economic cooperation between Cairo and Seoul.

A New Phase in Bilateral Relations



During the talks, El-Sisi stressed that Egypt and South Korea were fully aligned on the importance of strengthening cooperation across different sectors.

He said the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership reflected the growing importance of South Korea to Egypt’s economic and diplomatic priorities.

The president also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to attracting additional Korean investment and maintaining closer political coordination, expressing confidence that the coming years would bring substantial progress in bilateral relations.
