CAIRO – 13 April 2025: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty condemned Israeli targeting of humanitarian workers and staffers during a phone call with UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag on Saturday.
During the phone call, Abdelatty denounced the recent decision to close six schools operated by the UN Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, which constitutes a blatant violation of international law, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.
He underscored the vital role the agency plays in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees.
The call addressed the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and efforts to ensure safe and sustainable access to necessary humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians in enclave.
The discussions also focused on the importance of halting ongoing hostilities in Gaza and reviving the ceasefire agreement.
Moreover, Abdelatty urged intensifying support from the international community and UN organizations for Palestinians in Gaza.
He discussed the Arab reconstruction plan and the preparations underway for the early recovery and reconstruction conference, which Egypt is set to host in cooperation with the United Nations and the Palestinian government.
The foreign minister underscored the necessity for the international community to provide all forms of support to help restore essential services in Gaza, initiate early recovery activities, rehabilitate infrastructure, and counter plans to displace inhabitants.
Abdelatty outlined Egypt's vision for ensuring the success of the conference and its associated workshops, with a focus on emphasizing the role of the private sector and financing mechanisms, as well as the political and security aspects related to the future governance of the Gaza Strip.
