CAIRO - 26 March 2019: The Egyptian government denied on Tuesday, March 26, rumors that it intends to privatize the railway sector after the Cairo train crash last month.

In a statement, the Cabinet media center stated that contacted the Transport Ministry, which dismissed as baseless reports to that effect, stressing that the railway sector is state-owned.

The Ministry made it clear, saying that the private sector only contributes to upgrading railway facilities, stations, crossings and lines.

It is also allowed to invest in railway assets, such as lands and facilities, with the aim to secure revenues for the Railway Authority, the Ministry said.

The Transport Ministry asserted that it is acting to improve services offered to citizens and upgrade the efficiency of the railway sector, which serves some 350 million passengers annually.

It urged all media outlets to be accurate when covering news so as not to stir up confusion among commuters.
