CAIRO – 20 August 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Tuesday with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, and Vice Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee and Deputy President of the State of Palestine Hussein Al-Sheikh.
The talks focused on coordinating efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
According to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s mediation efforts in cooperation with Qatar and the United States to reach a ceasefire, ensure the entry of humanitarian aid, and secure the release of hostages and detainees.
He pointed to significant progress achieved, reflected in recent Cairo consultations with a Palestinian delegation on the proposal presented by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, which was accepted by Hamas.
The top diplomat stressed that the ball is now in Israel’s court and underscored the need for pressure on Tel Aviv to accept the proposal, which would help alleviate the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
He also highlighted the preparations underway to host an international conference on Gaza’s early recovery and reconstruction once a ceasefire agreement is reached.
The officials, for their part, expressed appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal mediation role in coordination with Qatar and the US, reaffirming their full support for Egypt’s efforts to advance peace and stability in the region
