CAIRO - 1 April 2020: The United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has praised Egypt's efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and its commitment to implementing health, safety, and prevention guidelines.

"Thank you to Egypt for amplifying our commitment to staying at home today so we can travel tomorrow," the UNWTO wrote on Twitter in response to Egypt lighting up the famed Great Pyramid with messages of unity and solidarity with those battling the novel coronavirus throughout the world, according to Ahram Online website.

"Stay safe", "Stay at home" and "Thank you to those keeping us safe," flashed in blue and green lights across the towering structure at the Giza plateau, southwest of the capital Cairo on Monday evening.

"A valued UNWTO member, Egypt is ready to welcome tourists again and ensure that the benefits the sector brings benefit everyone," it added.

The government has implemented a number of measures to stem the outbreak, suspending international flights, shutting schools and universities, banning mass gatherings and shuttering mosques and churches.
