The project of restoring the village of New Qurna by the international architect Hassan Fathi has been shortlisted for the "Sharjah ICCROM Award for Good Practices in Preserving and Protecting Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region 2020-2022" in its third cycle, which is awarded once every two years.

The award aims to honor outstanding works that contribute to the protection and revival of the tangible cultural heritage in the Arab world. The restoration project of Hassan Fathi village in New Qurna in Luxor is within the framework of the role of the Ministry of Culture represented by the National Organization for Cultural Harmonization headed by Engineer “Mohamed Abu Saada” in improving the visual image and protecting and preserving Material Architectural Heritage.

The restoration process in the first phase took approximately 24 months, according to accurate standards, to reach the current form after the buildings were affected and collapsed, which lasted for many years.

The first phase included the restoration and revitalization of the khan, the theater and the market using local materials for construction, which are the same materials that Hassan Fathi himself used. And his dwelling belongs to him.

Dr. Enas Abdel Dayem inaugurated the first phase in December 2021 in cooperation with the UNESCO Cairo office and Luxor Governorate.

Currently, the National Urban Coordination Agency, in cooperation with Luxor Governorate, is developing a visual vision for the development of the surrounding area to match the architectural value of the village.
