The researchers pointed out that in 2016 and 2019, the Austin team examined the mummies that were buried in Deir el-Medina in Luxor, this ancient Egyptian city was home to the people who built the royal tombs, and at that time, seven of the mummies were found on their bodies "tattooed" and the age of each was At least 3,000 years, according to sciencenewsforstudents.
Infrared images revealed 30 tattoos in different parts of the body of the mummy, and Austin said that the tattoos are writings in the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic language, adding that the tattoos he revealed indicate that this woman may have been a religious figure.
Austin added that another woman has a tattoo on her neck and depicts the human eye, this is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, these discoveries challenge an old idea that tattoos on ancient Egyptian women relate to fertility, and Austin suggested that tattoos are linked to women's roles as healers or priestesses.
Everything about the new tattoo discoveries was surprising, said Kerry Mohstein, an Egyptologist at Brigham Young University in Provo.
