Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty Sat, Sep. 27, 2025
CAIRO - 27 September 2025: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty joined the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting, organized by India as the incoming chair of the group, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In his address, Abdelatty highlighted pressing global challenges, particularly the persistent shortfall in funding for sustainable development. He underscored the significant role of BRICS in tackling these challenges by reinforcing a rules-based multilateral system with the United Nations at its core. He called for the establishment of a more just and equitable global economic order.

The Minister stressed the need to intensify efforts to boost cooperation on joint projects across key sectors such as energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, emerging technologies, and innovation — with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence.

He also highlighted the importance of enhancing financial settlements in local currencies, in alignment with the BRICS Cross-Border Payments Initiative, and increasing access to financing from the New Development Bank in local currencies.

Furthermore, Abdelatty called for stronger coordination among BRICS members to reform the global financial and debt architecture. This includes addressing the needs and priorities of developing countries and ensuring their access to concessional financing in support of their national development plans.

In this context, he also stressed the importance of ensuring stronger representation of developing countries in international economic decision-making. He advocated for the creation of an international mechanism to bolster local capacities in managing debt burdens and emphasized the continued need for support to help developing nations achieve their development goals.

On a separate note, the Egyptian Top Diplomat addressed the ongoing Israeli war on the Palestinian people, which he described as having resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. He held Israel fully responsible for the tragedy unfolding in Gaza and reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of any plans aimed at displacing or transferring the Palestinian population from their homeland.

He also welcomed the recent UN General Assembly resolution in support of implementing the two-state solution — a move that reflects broad international backing for the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
