CAIRO – 25 June 2025: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed Egypt's commitment to reinforce the recently announced ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Wednesday.
Sisi welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire agreement, stressing the importance of solidifying and adhering to it, especially given the regional escalation that almost plunged the area into chaos and widespread violence, the Egyptian Presidency reported.
The call covered Egypt's intensive efforts and communications over the past days with various concerned parties, notably the United States, to contain the escalation and restore calm and stability to the region.
The two leaders stressed the importance of resuming negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding the nuclear program, addressing concerns related to nuclear non-proliferation, and promoting the establishment of a weapons of mass destruction-free zone in the Middle East.
They described the current period as critical and sensitive, requiring pushing towards comprehensive political solutions and adopting approaches that consider the various dimensions related to regional security.
Sisi expressed Egypt's firm rejection of the recent Iranian missile attack targeting Qatar, emphasizing Egypt's condemnation of any actions that violate the sovereignty of nations, particularly those of Arab and Islamic countries.
The Iranian president expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Sisi, commending Egypt's wise positions that support the restoration of stability in the region and the efforts to prevent bloodshed among all parties.
Israel and Iran have committed to a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump early on Tuesday less than two days after the US launched heavy strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites of Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan.
Trump dubbed the strike “very successful,” claiming that key enrichment facilities there were “totally and completely obliterated.”
The US strikes came amidst the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, which culminated in a ceasefire after Tehran launched a limited retaliatory strike on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Tel Aviv initiated the war on 13 June, bombing nuclear and military sites in Iran and assassinating key military officials and senior nuclear scientists. The Israeli strikes disrupted Omani-mediated talked between the US and Iran that aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear enrichment.
