CAIRO – 25 June 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty underscored the need for respecting the sovereignty of Gulf states and other Arab nations in a phone call on Tuesday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The call mainly focused on the latest regional developments, including the cessation of attacks between Iran and Israel in a US mediated agreement. Minister Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s welcome of the ceasefire agreement, underscoring the need for committing to abiding by the agreement by both sides.
The deal is a pivotal step to de-escalate and defuse the recent regional tensions and restore stability and pave the way for political and diplomatic pathways, Abdelatty said.
The minister also emphasized the importance of exercising restraint during this critical period, noting that both sides need to take practical steps to contain tensions.
He affirmed Egypt’s commitment to continued coordination and consultation with all regional and international partners to support regional security and stability.
For his part, the Iranian minister affirmed his country’s respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Qatar and all other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, reiterating Iran's commitment to the principle of good neighborliness.
Both ministers agreed to continue working toward de-escalation in the region.
On Monday, Iranian Armed Forces announced that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with a devastating and powerful missile attack as part of Operation “Basharat al-Fatah” [the Herald of the Victory], in retaliation to the US attacks on three Iranian uranium enrichment facilities on Sunday.
In a statement, the Iranian IRGC said that its forces bombed the US Al Udeid base in Qatar, the largest strategic asset of the US military in the West Asia region.
According to The New York Times, Iran informed Qatar in advance of the attacks in order to minimize casualties
However, the Qatari Ministry of Defense announced that Qatari air defenses successfully intercepted a missile attack targeting Al-Udeid Air Base, noting that the incident did not result in any deaths or injuries.
Spokesman of Qatari Foreign Ministry Majed Al Ansary stated that Qatar strongly condemned the attack as considered it a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Qatar, its airspace, international law, and the United Nations Charter.
