CAIRO – 31 August 2021: The Egyptian-Qatari committee tasked with following up outstanding issues between the two countries metTuesday in Cairo.
According to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yasser Othman, assistant to the foreign minister for Arab affairs, headed the Egyptian delegation. The Qatari delegation was headed by Fahad al-Hajeri, the special envoy for regional affairs.
The committee discussed the issues in its agenda and means to enhance bilateral relations in the next stage.
Both Qatar and Egypt, as well as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain signed Al-Ula Declaration in January 2021, which ended a four-year bitter estrangement against Qatar. The committee was formed in the aftermath to normalize and strengthen ties.
“Outstanding issues” have remained between the two countries, which is what the committee is expected to resolve.
Qatar has hosted hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters since the ouster of late President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, and was accused by Egypt of supporting terrorism in the country.
For the first time in more than four years since severing ties between Egypt and Qatar in 2017, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Baghdad on Saturday.
