Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss bilateral relations and a range of regional and international issues.
The two ministers reaffirmed the importance of the strategic partnership between Egypt and Russia and highlighted the September 2026 meeting between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. They stressed the importance of building on the understandings reached during that meeting to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The talks also addressed efforts to expand economic, trade and investment cooperation, alongside advancing major strategic projects, particularly the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant and the Russian Industrial Zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The ministers also discussed efforts to boost tourism and air traffic between the two countries.
According to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Nader Zaki, the meeting also covered a number of regional and international issues. The two sides exchanged views on developments across the region and stressed the importance of continued coordination to support efforts to de-escalate tensions, contain crises and reach sustainable political settlements.
The ministers also discussed the Palestinian issue. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s position that the Palestinian cause remains central to achieving peace and security in the Middle East, stressing support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and to establish an independent state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The talks also covered developments in Sudan and Libya, as well as the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, including maritime security and the freedom of international trade. The ministers stressed the importance of respecting states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding international law and supporting political and diplomatic solutions to regional crises.
Egypt and Russia also agreed to maintain coordination and consultations on regional and international issues through various international forums.
