CAIRO - 25 August 2019: Egypt's Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayyeb, has ordered the establishment of a committee to implement the objectives of the Human Fraternity Document.
The document was signed by Pope Francis and El-Tayyeb in Abu Dhabi during the pope’s visit to the UAE in February.
The document invites “all persons who have faith in God and faith in human fraternity to unite and work together so that it may serve as a guide for future generations to advance a culture of mutual respect in the awareness of the great divine grace that makes all human beings brothers and sisters," according to a Thursday statement by Al-Azhar, the highest institution of Sunni Islamic learning.
The grand imam said in Thursday's statement that the formation of the committee "is a serious step towards achieving the objectives of the Human Fraternity Document, which is considered as the first of its kind in our modern history to establishing the culture of citizenship, coexistence and brotherhood."
El-Tayeb also stressed that establishing this committee serves the crucial goal of achieving solidarity, unity, coexistence, brotherhood and tolerance throughout the world.
"The spread of this document's principles and its implementation will definitely go a long way in achieving security and stability all over the world," the grand imam said.
El-Tayeb also congratulated the members of the committee for being selected to serve on this human mission, and called on them to work hard to spread the principles of this document all over the world.
The committee includes religious figures, intellectuals and media personalities.
