CAIRO – 1 August 2021: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister Ramtane Lamamra have agreed on “full support” for Tunisian President Kais Saied.
Sisi and Lamamra met Sunday in Cairo, where they discussed the situation in Tunisia, which shares borders with Algeria. They both emphasized their support for stability in Tunisia and realizing the choices and the will of the Tunisian people to ultimately preserve their capabilities and security.
Saied on July 25 sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and suspended parliament for 30 days. The country had witnessed huge protests over the government’s handling of the Covid crisis.
The president also ordered a crackdown on 460 businessmen suspected of corruption as well as an investigation into the “illegal funding” of parties.
