CAIRO – 28 September 2025: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s full backing for United Nations agencies operating under extremely difficult conditions in Gaza, in light of Israeli targeting of UN facilities and operations.

Abdelatty underscored this commitment as he met on Saturday with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The foreign minister affirmed Egypt’s continued backing of the secretary-general and UN agencies, foremost among them the United Nations Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, underscoring its role as indispensable.

Regarding the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty called for intensifying efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the population.

He noted President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s appreciation for US President Donald Trump’s commitment to working with regional leaders to end the war in Gaza and open political and developmental prospects.

The foreign minister strongly rejected any proposals that could lead to the displacement of Palestinians or the liquidation of the Palestinian cause, condemning Israeli acts of killing and starvation.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s adherence to establishing an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as a cornerstone for stability in the Middle East, and welcomed the recognition of the Palestinian state by numerous countries.

Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s plan to host an international conference for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, in cooperation with the UN, the Palestinian Authority, and international partners, to mobilize support for the reconstruction projects in Gaza.

The foreign minister praised the UN secretary-general’s fair and wise positions on various international and regional issues.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the UN’s role in preserving international peace and security and addressing growing global challenges.

Guterres commended Egypt’s role as a key actor in the multilateral system, its firm commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, and its persistent efforts to enhance peace and security, support development, and uphold international law.

He also lauded Egypt’s vision and efforts toward achieving stability in the Middle East.
