Egypt Calls for Unified Arab Position on Palestinian Cause

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said the Palestinian cause was at a historic turning point that requires a unified Arab position and stronger joint action to end the occupation, protect the Palestinian people and restore their legitimate rights.

Abdelatty made the remarks during a consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

He stressed the importance of building on Arab consensus and strengthening coordination on issues and challenges affecting Arab strategic interests and national security.

The foreign minister called for continued coordinated Arab efforts to push for a stronger international position on Israeli violations, including ending settlement expansion and annexation, preserving the unity of Palestinian territories and launching a serious political process toward the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of Iranian attacks targeting several Arab countries, stressing the need to respect the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of states.

At the same time, he called for containing the escalation, reducing tensions, preventing the conflict from spreading and returning to political and diplomatic channels.

On maritime security, Abdelatty rejected the use of seas, waterways and maritime straits as tools for pressure, escalation or coercion. He stressed the need to ensure the security and freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, while emphasizing that security in the Red Sea is the primary and exclusive responsibility of the states bordering it.

The Egyptian foreign minister also called for a political settlement to the crisis in Yemen that preserves the country’s unity and territorial integrity.

He stressed the importance of resolving disputes among Arab countries through direct dialogue and diplomatic channels within an Arab framework, in a way that preserves Arab unity and strengthens joint Arab action.
