Spalding Gentlemen's Society's latest lecture on Friday is by leading Egyptologist Dr Chris Naunton.
The talk, called 'Egyptologists' Notebooks' takes place at 7.30pm at Broad Street Methodist Church in Spalding.
Prior to the 19th century very little was known about ancient Egypt other than what could be gleaned from ancient writers like Herodotus and Strabo, and even the Bible.
From the time of Napoleon’s invasion in 1798 onwards Europeans came to visit Egypt in far greater numbers than ever before, and many were captivated by the ancient ruins and treasures lying beneath the sand.
Some took it upon themselves to document these strange and wonderful buildings and colourful rock-cut tombs filled with coffins and mummies. Their notes, drawings, maps and plans were an invaluable aid to scholars – the first Egyptologists – and today they are an important record of the remains as they were, prior to excavation and restoration.
Chris is an Egyptologist, writer and broadcaster, with 20 documentary films behind him). His books include ‘Searching for the Lost Tombs of Egypt’ and ‘Egyptologists’ Notebooks’. He was the lead Egyptologist on a new investigation into the death and burial of Tutankhamun for the TV film ‘Tutankhamun: The Mystery of the Burnt Mummy’.
