CAIRO - 3 December 2019: The Tahya Misr (Long Live Egypt) Fund announced the launch of the initial phase of the presidential initiative Nour Hayat ("Light of Life") to conduct health screening tests for 450,000 pupils in the primary stage.

The initiative targets the early detection and treatment of the causes of vision impairment and vision loss in 10 Egyptian governorates, according to Ahram Online.

Tamer Abdel-Fattah, acting executive director of the fund, said on Monday the first phase of Nour Hayat aims at screening 900,000 pupils throughout the current school year as follows: "120,0000 students in 135 schools in Qalioubiya governorate; 120,000 students in 249 schools in Daqahliya governorate; 120,000 students in 276 schools in Sharqiya governorate; 120,000 students in 331 schools in Beni Suef governorate; 120,000 students in 288 schools in Minya governorate; 120,000 students in 306 schools in Qena governorate; 60,000 students in 199 schools in Luxor governorate; 60,000 students in 109 schools in Suez governorate; 120,000 students in 156 schools in Alexandria governorate; and 30,000 students in 151 schools in Matrouh governorate."

Abdel-Fattah added that it is planned to provide 132,000 eyeglasses for free for students diagnosed with vision impairment during the first phase of the initiative, noting that 10 to 20 percent of school students have varying degrees of vision impairment.

The initiative's statistics show that students in rural areas are less vulnerable to the causes of vision impairment and vision loss than in urban areas.

On 10 February, the Long Live Egypt Fund announced the allocation of EGP 1 billion to implement the initiative at Egyptian schools.
