Egypt has stressed the importance of cooperation among Nile Basin countries to ensure shared benefits and protect mutual interests during talks with Tanzania.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Tanzanian counterpart, Mahmoud Kombo, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
Abdelatty underscored the need to uphold a spirit of consensus and solidarity to restore inclusiveness to the Nile Basin Initiative, while rejecting unilateral measures.
He also welcomed positive developments in the initiative’s ongoing consultative process, aimed at restoring its inclusiveness in accordance with international law and in a way that serves the interests of all Nile Basin countries.
The two ministers also discussed the growing momentum in Egyptian-Tanzanian relations, which they welcomed.
The momentum has included President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Tanzania in July and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s participation in the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project.
Abdelatty described the project as a successful example of strategic partnership between Egypt and Tanzania.
He also invited Tanzania to participate in the Alamein Africa Forum, which is scheduled to be held in New Alamein from October 2 to 4 on the sidelines of the African Union’s eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
