CAIRO – 11 May 2025: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, and Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, on Sunday.
During the calls, Minister Abdelatty welcomed the ceasefire agreement announced by India and Pakistan on May 10, 2025. He expressed Egypt’s full support for this significant step and commended both nations for their wise decision, which contributes to de-escalation, fosters calm, and promotes security and stability in the South Asian region.
He emphasized the importance of upholding the ceasefire as a foundation for building mutual trust and fulfilling the aspirations of the Indian and Pakistani peoples for peace, cooperation, and development.
For their part, the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan expressed appreciation for Egypt’s constructive stance and its efforts to promote calm and regional stability. They also welcomed Egypt’s diplomatic outreach and affirmed the strength of bilateral relations between Egypt and both South Asian nations.
The nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday after four days of fighting—the worst in decades—that threatened to escalate into full-scale war.
The Indian foreign secretary announced that both countries agreed to immediately stop the fighting, effective at 5 PM (1130 GMT) today, following talks between their military chiefs.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed on X: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.”
Several civilians were reportedly killed and many more were injured in the exchanges of attacks initiated by India in response to a last month massacre of 26 people, most of them Indian tourists, in Kashmir – a territory divided between the two nations but claimed in full by both.
