Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi have warned of the extremely negative consequences of any Israeli ground offensive in the Palestinian city of Rafah, as it will further exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
The warning came during a meeting between the two top diplomats in Geneva on Monday, as they discussed the latest developments of the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The two ministers underlined the importance of continuing efforts aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to the Gazans, as well as working together to prevent a spillover of the conflict that could have a serious impact on the region's security and stability.
The spokesman stated that Shoukry reiterated Egypt's concerns on the deteriorating situation in the West Bank as a result of the increasing Israeli military incursions, stressing the need to take clear steps towards applying the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state.
Shoukry emphasized the necessity of implementing UN Security Council Resolution No. 2720, which calls for establishing a UN mechanism to monitor and accelerate the process of delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
The spokesman noted that the two sides probed challenges facing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) after some countries suspended their financial contributions to the agency.
