CAIRO – 16 August 2020: Volume of the Ministry of Transport's projects planned from June 30, 2014 to June 30, 2024, recorded LE 1.1 trillion, including LE 377 billion in the field of roads and bridges, Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir said.
This came during reviewing transport projects over the past few years at the inauguration of Adly Mansour station, in the presence of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
He said that the volume of investments in land ports reached LE 14.6 billion, in railways hit LE 142 billion, and LE 512 billion in tunnels.
Wazir mentioned that 7,000 kilometers of new roads are being implemented, at a cost of 175 billion, of which 4,500 kilometers have been implemented, and 1,300 kilometers are being implemented during the current year.
Minister of Transport, also reviewed the most prominent axes of the transport sector development strategy, noting that the Samalout corridor connects the eastern and western desert road, and the aim of it is to link industrial development areas with the new agricultural areas west of Upper Egypt Road through the residential block in Samalout.
He stated that the efficiency of 9,600 kilometers had been raised at a cost of LE 35 billion, and only 2,000 kilometers remained, indicating the implementation of the President's directives to clear, dredge and lining canals and pave the side roads of these canals.
Wazir confirmed that there are plans to reach 10,200 kilometers of railways by 2024, and 11,530 kilometers by 2030, adding that the railways carry 1 million passengers per day, and there are plans to transport 1.5 million passengers per day by 2024, and 2 million passengers by 2030.
He said that the development of signals is one of the most important railway projects, as it contributes to eliminating crossings accidents, pointing out that the cost of developing crossings and signals amounts to 46.8 billion pounds, of which works worth 9.4 billion pounds have been implemented.
