CAIRO – 13 June 2019: Starting from the 16th of June, El-Warsha Theater Troupe, the first independent troupe in the free theater movement in Egypt, presents you with a show that is the outcome of a five-month theater-dance workshop on their theater downtown. He participants of the Expressive Movement Workshop, under the surveillance of Italian director Salvatore Cataldo, will present “Garage de l’ Opéra” for three days.

Through their event’s Facebook page, the troupe expressed the hard work they went through to present us with this show. “The presentation is the outcome of a five months - twice per week workshop whose aim was to lead the participants through the discovery of the possibilities of their bodies as tools for expression, and get them to experience performance on stage, the title Garage de l’ Opéra arose as a common image to symbolize the story of each of us as a lover of the performing Arts, as a questioner of his own identity, as the simple human being with thurst for Poetry,” they added.

The performance will include a group of phenomenol dancers such as Rakha, Manal Mehana, Muhammad Zain, Shahd Shehab, Ali Samany, Menna Mansour, Reham Fathi, Doaa Al Zaidy, John Samuel and Marian George with the Sherif Eldaly designed the light and Rakha composed the music.

As mentioned above El Warsha is the first independent troupe in the free theater movement in Egypt. They started their activity in 1987 by re-examining the western heritage of our theater through adapting a number of European plays with growing freedom. They encountered the popular performance arts that pre-existed the western model. In the last few years the company has turned its attention to everyday life and to vernacular creativity as sources of the intimate theater that they are looking for to reflect us, in our dialogue with others.

El-Warsha has toured locally, within the Arab World and beyond since 1990. It has developed activities linking art, learning and holistic development and has sought to create an Arab network with specialized organizations to cater for the need of independent companies.
