The Grand Egyptian Museum contains a huge amount of artifacts that exceed 50 thousand artifacts, and includes the entire collection of King Tutankhamun and will be displayed for the first time in front of the public completely, meaning that visitors have an appointment with more than 5000 pieces of the golden king at the time of the museum opening.
During the past few days, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities began implementing the museum display of the Pharaonic King within a base of 7000 meters, after restoring it in a modern scientifically recognized method, where restorers at the restoration center of the Grand Egyptian Museum were able to return a large number of pieces as they were before the time of their discovery. And among those pieces was the coffin of King Tutankhamun.
On the story of the coffin, Dr. Tayeb Abbas, Assistant Minister for Archaeological Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum, says that the safety of antiquities is our first goal when receiving artifacts from archaeological sites and museums, and this is what made us succeed in dealing with the coffin of King Tutankhamun and restoring it to the fullest in ways. The modern scientific world recognized internationally, and that the coffin of King Tutankhamun was one of the artifacts in which there was lost hope, due to the poor condition it was in before receiving it and entering the restoration laboratories in the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the difficulty of the coffin since the time it was removed from its tomb and transferred from Luxor to the Grand Museum It took us too long to plan.
On the work plan for the restoration of the coffin, Dr. Tayeb Abbas explained that the work of moving the coffin began in August 2019, and we had a work plan, but the work on the ground differs greatly, as the coffin has "2 walls", and the stairs are sloping steeply, and the coffin is in a room The burial inside a stone coffin, the temperature is very high, and even we pull the coffin out was a very difficult and dangerous issue, because the safety of the impact is very important, and our only concern is that the impact does not cause any damage.
Dr. Al-Tayyib Abbas added that the coffin remained 97 years inside the cemetery without restoration, and even when Carter restored the pieces of King Tutankhamun, he used many layers of wax on the pieces, which is the method that was known at that time, but we started removing those layers. Despite the many layers of wax, but it preserved it to some extent.
