Egypt, Germany’s FMs reviews Libyan issue, Palestinian-Israel cause

CAIRO - 23 August 2020: Over a phone call with German counterpart Heiko Maas on Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the latest developments in the Libyan issue and the situation on the Palestinian-Israeli cause, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in a statement.



Regarding the Libyan file, both ministers tackled the cease-fire initiative that was declared on Friday by Libyan Presidential Council, which is led by Fayez Al-Sarraj, and Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Agila Saleh, Hafez said, adding that Egypt and Germany stressed the necessity of taking advantage of this important step to reach a comprehensive political settlement to bring security and stability, and contribute to fighting terrorist organizations and foreign interference in Libya. Both Libyan leaders called for demilitarize the oil-rich area of Jafa-Sirte. The Libyan government, headed by Sarraj, called for holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections in March.



As for the Palestinian-Israeli cause, Minister Shoukry stressed the importance of building on the latest developments to preserve the two-state solution and work forward towards enhancing opportunities to achieve just peace in light of restoring legitimate Palestinian rights in accordance with the relevant international legitimacy resolutions, Hafez continued.



Recently, the Palestinian-Israel file has witnessed a new change in the issue course when the United Arab of the Emirates reached a deal of reconciliation with Israel in return for suspending the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian West Bank, to be the first Gulf State that normalizes relations with Israel.



The deal was welcomed by some Arab countries like Egypt, Bahrain and others, while the Palestinian Authorities and Hamas government, besides many Palestinian leaders totally rejected the deal.
