CAIRO - 19 March 2019: Egypt climbed 10 spots to rank at 95 on the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2018, up from of 110 last year. According to the GII report, our country witnessed the biggest improvement in overall ranking for the MENA region and was one of the lower-middle income economies that appeared to “stand out as performing better than would be expected by their income level.”.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s Cabinet has issued a semi annual report listing all the achievements in the quality of Egypt’s scientific research and technological systems, and on top of these achievements was Egypt advancing on the Global Innovation Index (GDI) by 10 spots.

The Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual ranking of countries by their capacity for, and success in, innovation. It aims to capture the multi-dimensional facets of innovation and provide the tools that can assist in tailoring policies to promote long-term output growth, improved productivity, and job growth. The GII helps to create an environment in which innovation factors are continually evaluated. It provides a key tool and a rich database of detailed metrics for economies, which in 2018 encompasses 126 economies, representing 90.8% of the world’s population and 96.3% of global GDP.

According to the report of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s Cabinet, the government disbursed LE19.9 billion in the first half of fiscal year 2018/2019 towards the development of the scientific research system, and the main reason behind Egypt's progress in the GII ranking is forming a committee from the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology to improve Egypt’s status in international scientific research reports, increasing the number of international research published by Egypt to more than 20,000 research papers.
