CAIRO – On Sunday, December 15, U.S. Embassy Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs Helen LaFave congratulated 720 young Egyptians for developing exceptional English language skills by completing the two-year long U.S. Embassy English Access Microscholarship Program. The graduation ceremony at the Cairo Opera House gathered graduates from across Egypt to meet and network with students from different regions of Egypt. For this hallmark event, the U.S. Embassy gathered students from Alexandria, Assuit, Benha, Beni Suef, Cairo, Damanhour, Damietta, Edfu, Esna, Hurghada, Ismailia, Kom Ombo, Luxor, Malawi, Mansoura, Minya, Nubia, Port Said, Qus, Samalout, Sohag, and South Sinai.
In congratulating the graduates, Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs Helen LaFave said, “You have worked hard over the past two years to learn a language utilized throughout the world, and in doing so you have also gained confidence and positioned yourselves to be competitive for jobs and educational opportunities which require English communication skills.”
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the English Access Microscholarship Program provides students with two years of high-quality English language training and the opportunity to participate in extracurricular language learning and leadership activities. The American University in Cairo, AMIDEAST, and the Egyptian Education Resource Association, as implementing partners, conduct the classes. Since 2006, more than 5,000 talented Egyptian youth from underprivileged backgrounds have learned English through the Access Program. Globally, more than 100,000 students have graduated from the program.
